A short trail with a memorable finish

Palisade Falls is in Hyalite Canyon, south of Bozeman and beyond Hyalite Reservoir. The Forest Service describes a half-mile paved nature trail to views of the falls, approximately one mile out and back. It is a shorter option than many mountain hikes, with a picnic area and vault toilet at the trailhead. Bring your own drinking water.

Choose the right day for your group

The paved surface can make this an appealing outing for a mixed group, but pavement does not remove slopes, wet surfaces, or seasonal ice. Confirm current conditions and accessibility needs with the Forest Service. Give yourself time to enjoy the view rather than treating the distance as a promise of how quickly everyone will finish.

Getting there from your stay

From Loft503 or Vintage Estate, plan a drive south toward Hyalite Canyon and follow current directions to the Palisade Falls trailhead. A rental car or prearranged private outing is a practical choice. If using a driver, arrange the return pickup in advance; do not depend on finding a rideshare at the trailhead.

Keep the rest of the day relaxed

Pack water, a snack, layers, and footwear with grip. Stay on the established trail and viewing areas, and check road access, weather, and forest alerts before leaving. Seasonal gates or snow can change access well beyond the short walking distance. Back downtown, enjoy a shower, a comfortable living room, and dinner close to home.
