The white M above Bozeman is a familiar landmark and a rewarding place to get your bearings. Make the climb part of a morning outdoors, then return downtown for lunch and a slower afternoon.

Choose your route, then your pace

The College M Trail has several ways up, including steep, direct sections and longer, more gradual options. Gallatin Valley Land Trust describes roughly 750 feet of elevation gain, so even a shorter route involves a real climb. Use its route guide to choose the distance and grade that suit your group rather than following the first uphill path.

A favorite for visiting Bobcat families

With the M representing Montana State University above the valley, this can be a memorable outing during a campus visit or a weekend with your student. Take breaks, enjoy the views, and agree on a comfortable turnaround point. Nobody needs to turn a family walk into a race.

Getting to the trailhead

The College M trailhead is northeast of downtown at the mouth of Bridger Canyon. Plan a drive from Loft503 or Vintage Estate, or arrange a private pickup and return. It is a separate outing from a Main Street stroll. Check current maps and parking information before leaving, and use designated parking areas.

Before you set out

Bring water, layers, and footwear suited to a natural-surface trail. The Forest Service lists no drinking water at the trailhead. Mud, snow, ice, heat, and changing weather can alter the experience; check current conditions and stay on established routes. Leave time for the descent, then enjoy returning to your own downtown space.

Plan your visit

Use the official sources for current access, hours, and service information before your visit.

A downtown place to come back to

Loft503 sleeps up to four, while Vintage Estate sleeps up to eight across its historic home and suites. For other group sizes, explore Vintage House, sleeping six, or Rouse House, sleeping two. Individual V1 and V2 bookings become available within 30 days of arrival when not already reserved as part of a larger stay.

We recommend booking early for popular weekends. Check Loft503 dates, check Vintage Estate dates, or browse all stays. Final availability and terms appear in the booking engine.
